This is my Series 1 240Z, which I purchased new on March 31, 1971 from Jack Crew Trophy Datsun in Dallas, TX. Built in December 1970, the car is titled as a 1971 model. In 1999 I began a total re-build of the car. The project was suspended in 2000 and resumed in 2009. Still very much a "work in progress", these pictures show a bit of the current state of the project.

As of 06/14/2010, the refreshed rolling chassis is off to get new body paint and expected to be back in my hands in September.

09/07/10 All body work is complete and multiple rounds of primer and block sanding are in progress. The car may go into the paint booth the week of 09/26. Delivery back to me is probably now mid-October.

10/09/10 The hood, doors and hatch all have their back sides finished in fresh color. Excitement is building, but prep on the rest of the car continues to drag slowly forward - I don't think it will be home by mid-October as previously hoped.

11/16/10 Well, it is now 5 months and still no paint! Maybe this week - who knows? I have to get some small consolation from the fact that this shop has painted 2 or 3 ZCON Gold Cup cars. I know he will do a great job. At least the engine rebuild is moving along. Of course, I have no car to put it in! Got to be a laugh buried in there somewhere.

12/20/10 Here it is, Christmas week! Santa Painter has paid me a visit and left me with a gift of fresh 920 Gold. The finish looks great and it has not yet been color sanded and buffed. The car will be home sometime in January - Happy New Year!

03/11/11 January came and went, as did February. Promises made, promises not kept. It is 3 days short of 9 months and the car is finally home. I am really, really happy with the results. The hours of repetitive filling and block sanding before painting paid off big time. More hours of color sanding followed with progressive levels of buffing and here it is - no waves, no ripples, no dings, just a silky smooth and glossy finish. Now to get started on putting Humpty Dumpty back together.

03/31/11 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! I bought the car 40 years ago today. WOW - what a feeling. Can't wait to get her back on the road and show off a true classic.

08/22/11 The summer is almost over and the installation of the interior, electrical, and other mechanical is now complete. Today the car was loaded onto a trailer dolly for a short ride to the glass shop to get the original windshield and hatch glass installed. The shop has experience with the stainless steel trim and is ready for the challenge. All goes well and that afternoon the car is trailed across the street to the engine shop.

08/23/11 The engine and transmission are finally installed. What a rush to see this major step completed. Now to get busy on all the hookups.

08/26/11 A new battery is installed and fuel is added to the tank. After a minute of cranking, the engine fires right off and runs smoothly. Big grins all around, especially from the engine builder!!!
